Biography

Christie Scheele is a contemporary landscape painter whose work distills the natural world into quiet, atmospheric compositions. Working in oil, encaustic and mixed media, she is known for her ability to strip scenes down to their essential forms, creating paintings that are calm, meditative and expansive. Her work draws inspiration from the Catskills, the Hudson Valley and other regions she has traveled, yet the resulting images often transcend specific geography.

Scheele has exhibited widely for more than three decades, and her paintings are held in private, corporate and institutional collections throughout the United States and abroad. Her background includes studies at the Philadelphia College of Art and years of exploration into the subtleties of color, light and spatial harmony. She maintains an active studio practice and is recognized for her reflective, reductive approach to the landscape genre.

STATEMENT

My paintings begin with the landscape, but they are never just about a particular place. I am interested in the essence of a scene, the spaces between things, and the atmosphere that surrounds land, sky and water. By simplifying form and softening detail, I create compositions that invite contemplation and a sense of spaciousness.

I work intuitively with color and light, seeking the point where a painting becomes more than representation. Through reduction, I look for clarity. Through subtle shifts in tone, I aim to evoke memory, calm and the feeling of being immersed in a moment. My intention is to create landscapes that resonate emotionally, offering viewers a quiet place to settle into and reflect.
