Biography

Michael Howard paints and lives on Whidbey Island, Washington. He has been engaged in the Seattle arts community for several years through exhibiting his artwork, being involved in exhibition panel discussions, curatorial projects, and teaching. He exhibited with the former Francine Seders Gallery, Prographica/KDR in Seattle, and Museo in Langley, WA as well as other national museums and galleries. He strongly believes in connecting and expanding the arts community in northwest Washington.

Howard earned a BFA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and completed his graduate degree in painting at the University of Cincinnati. He has had solo exhibitions in Inova; the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee; the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design; the Francine Seders Gallery, Seattle; the Association for Visual Artists, Chattanooga; Pierce College, Lakewood, Washington; and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Recently his work was included in exhibitions at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and the Haggerty Museum of Art, and a solo exhibition at Prographica KDR Gallery in Seattle, WA.

STATEMENT

I am pursuing painting through an ongoing consideration of what it means for something to be painterly. Whatever the definition may be, it seems to revolve around revealing difference and allowing experience and understanding to expand rather than contract. It is a kind of generous specificity.
