ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is foremost an exploration of emotion through color and shapes. I feel the only way to get close to the thing (whatever that may be, I still don’t know) is to approach it obliquely.

Things seem strangely more concise in the periphery. The painting begins with an emotional impetus and visual design, as the process unfolds the initial concepts quickly change as the painting begins to assert its own ideas. The painting process then becomes a conversation.

My goal is to listen and do my best to be present and open to unexpected outcomes. Take chances. My hope through this process is that I can finalize a work that touches on some universal human truth the viewer can relate to their own experiences. A forgotten memory, a dream, a lost place or time.
