ABOUT THE ARTIST
STATEMENT
I paint women and flowers to explore the inner world of emotion and the outer world of home. I work with acrylic paint on canvas, building the paintings intuitively, without preplanning. This allows me to stay engaged with the process and respond to what happens as the image evolves.
I believe we all create a visual history for ourselves by what we look at and live with every day. Living with art is as enriching and meaningful as making it. I love it when a painting finds a home and becomes part of someone else's visual history.
Biography
Zue Stevenson paints women and flowers to explore the inner world of emotion, and the outer world of everyday life. Color and emotion are important to her, and she wants each figure she paints to be a unique individual. Flowers have a long association with women and life's celebrations and transitions. Zue works with acrylic paint on canvas, mixing elements of reality and abstraction. She paints intuitively, without pre-planning the composition. This keeps her engaged with the process and enables her to respond to the painting as it develops.
She is self-taught and has been painting since 2016. The painters, Manet and Chardin, were early influences because of the beauty and poetry in their work. In 2019, she was chosen to participate in Portland Open Studios. Since then, she has shown at various venues in Portland, OR, Seattle and Bellevue, WA, and at the art galleries Museo, in Langley, and Salem On The Edge, in Salem, OR. She lives and works in Portland, OR.
